Doug's Blog: I love trees, but...

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) – I have always loved trees. When Lila and I built our Ocean Springs home back in 1986, we looked for a tree lined street and lot.

Back then, I was in my early 30s and springtime raking didn't seem like such a big deal.  It's a very big deal now.  I am pushing the mid-50s, and last weekend I undertook the annual springtime yard clean-up.

I began at 8:00 in the morning.  Do some raking, take a break, and then do some more raking.  When I finished, it was 4:30 in the afternoon.  Out front, there were 35 bags of leaves on the curb.  That's right, 35 bags.  And not just little bags.  These were the full-size, 39 gallon lawn and leaf bags.

I thought I was going to keel over.  I had no idea how heavy a 39 gallon bag of leaves can be.  It probably weighs more than I do. Thank goodness by oldest daughter was in town for spring break and was able to give me a hand.  Her help was instrumental in my not having to visit the emergency room or a pain management clinic.

Over the years, hurricanes have taken some of my trees, including two big ones that landed on the house during Katrina.  Fortunately, there was no major damage.

But you get what you ask for.  I wanted trees, and so I have them.  I also have a backache, my muscles are screaming at me, and my daughter will probably never show up for spring break again.

In 1986, I wanted trees.  In 2010, I want a chainsaw.
