Pass Christian development taking applications for affordable homes

PASS CHRISTIAN (WLOX) - Back Bay Mission will open its sales center Saturday for Bethel Estates, a new development of affordable homes, the first on the Gulf Coast built under the Smart Code concept.

The development of 32 homes includes 28 single-family detached and four duplex homes on four acres along Lang Avenue near downtown Pass Christian.  Houses feature energy-efficient design, construction and appliances, while generous front porches and beautiful landscaping will contribute to creating a new neighborhood.  Construction on model homes is expected to begin soon.

Back Bay Mission will offer mortgage assistance to qualified home buyers in order to make these homes affordable.  The price of the homes could be reduced up to 50 percent with available mortgage assistance for qualified buyers.  The amount of assistance is dependent on income level and need.  Buyers must also qualify for a first mortgage.

The development is funded in part by a grant from the Mississippi Development Authority's Long Term Workforce Housing Program and will receive construction financing from The Peoples Bank.

"We are truly excited to get the Bethel Estates community under way," said Rev. Shari Prestemon, Executive Director of Back Bay Mission. "It represents a new facet of Back Bay Mission's historic commitment to affordable housing on the Gulf Coast, and I think people will be delighted to see how well-designed and beautiful this neighborhood will be."

All homes will be elevated with driven-pile foundations and will meet International Building Code and FEMA flood zone requirements. The spacious two and three bedroom floor plans offer up to 1,300 square feet of living space.

Applications are now being accepted. Call Everett Lewis at (228) 432-0301 ext. 311.

Bethel Estates is a joint development of Back Bay Mission and Alembic Development Company. Back Bay Mission is a community ministry of the United Church of Christ, founded in 1922.
