Some Jackson County residents oppose annexation

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) – For 46 years, James Fleming has lived on this rural road off Hwy 57, between I-10 and the Preserve Golf Course.  The unincorporated area is inside the Ocean Springs annexation map, but Fleming believes it's already spoken for.

"I call it Vancleave," said Fleming about his property.  "I just don't think Ocean Springs needs to come out this far."

Neighbors Dorine Mills and Ladd Flurry are also among the handful of people who live in the annexation area just south of the golf course.  They said city taxes are just one of the reasons they don't want to be part of Ocean Springs.

"This is Vancleave," said Mills.  "I mean, this has always been Vancleave, you know. And they've tried to take it away and put it into a bigger city, and this is our home. We're all concerned about money.  I mean everything costs more and more, I mean property taxes are definitely higher and higher because you got city and county taxes."

Craig Orrison doesn't live in the annexation area, but he owns property there, including space beside his children's restaurant, The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint.  The Shed lies just south of the Coca-Cola plant on Hwy 57.  He said he'll take on the taxes in exchange for city services.

"I'm in favor of it because we are in need of utilities," said Orrison.  "We are hooked up to a Gautier sewer system, but there is no water system.  It's always an issue."

But for the community living north of I-10, many hope their voices are heard.

"I would hope that they would pull all of us together and sit us down to approve whether this thing can happen," said Mills.

Three of the five Jackson County supervisors said Monday they would represent the interests of the citizens affected by the annexation.

"We ain't got enough people here to fight it," said Fleming.  "So the Board of Supervisors is going to have to fight with us."
