'World class restrooms' being built in Harrison County

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Coast Transit Authority says get ready for world class restroom facilities along Harrison County's beach. Thursday, crews put a roof on the new comfort station at Jones Park.

Work is also underway on comfort stations at Courthouse Road, the Long Beach Harbor, and the Coliseum.

CTA Director Kevin Coggin said FEMA is paying for the state of the art facilities, which run $1.2 million each. Coggin said along with the restrooms, they will also have vending machines and showers, and are built to last.

"The previous ones were wood up on stilts," Coggin said. "They had some aluminum, some vinyl, metal roofing. Every time a storm came through did some damage. We were having to use tax payers' dollars to go down there and fix them. It was not a good deal. These are hardened concrete, colored concrete. They're designed to withstand storm surge, wind, and water and much more durable. That's the main difference. And the look of them is a much better look than the other ones."

Coggin said all four comfort stations should be open by July. He said the CTA is looking into building another facility at Rodenburg Avenue in Biloxi.
