South MS behind the nation in Census participation

WASHINGTON, DC (WLOX) - The census isn't joking on this April Fool's Day. The Census Bureau has dubbed April 1, 2010 as Census Day, a day to spread awareness and encourage participation in the 2010 Census.

Events are planned around the country including in Jackson, to encourage people to fill out their census forms. And we in South Mississippi need to heed the call, as all our counties fall behind the nation's return rate of 52 percent.

George & Pearl River Counties have the highest participation rate with 50 percent, followed by Jackson County with 49 percent, Harrison County with 45 percent, Stone County with 44 percent, Greene with 42 percent and Hancock County comes in last place in South Mississippi with 41 percent.

And it's not just South Mississippians who need to fill out their census forms and send them in, as a whole the state also lags behind the national census participation rate with only 47 percent of forms returned.

Remember Census numbers determine congressional representation as well as how federal money is given to states.
