Golf tournament puts South Mississippi on the map

In just a few weeks some of the best golfers in the world will come to South Mississippi to play golf. The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic that begins April 28th will feature well known golfers like Jerry Pate, Lee Trevino, and Paul Azinger who are fifty or older playing in the PGA Tours Champions Tour.

This tournament puts our community on the map as a premiere golf destination. That's thanks to a number of local leaders and businesses who provided money to bring the event to our area not just for this year, but for the next three years.

We need to all get behind this event and help make it a success. Even if you are not a golf fan, there are a couple ways you can get involved. We were told when the event first was announced, hundreds of volunteers would be needed. We are glad to report 850 people have already said they will participate and that's fantastic.

The tournament also needs folks just like us to come out and watch the great golf that will be played.

One of the biggest winners that week will be Habitat for Humanity which will receive some of the money raised. Another big winner, our community and the tourism boost it should get now and hopefully for years to come.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
