Half million dollar park project underway in Ocean Springs

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Walkers will soon have a place to rest and reload at the new Ocean Springs Bridge park.  It's part of a masterplan, Mayor Connie Moran says, to better connect the city.

"Here's a green space (the park) which use to be an eyesore drainage ditch, that will connect the bridge walkway to the Front Beach walkway leading to the harbor," says Moran.

Steps will connect the bridge to the park.  A sidewalk will lead walkers into a walkway along Front Beach.  Along the way, people can stop by Fort Maurepas and the Ocean Springs harbor.  Plans for the park include benches, decorative fencing and stretching equipment for walkers.

"The part I like most of all is tying all these walking paths together. Not only does it enrich our life, but it also helps with our health," says Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown.

Mac Rouse drives from Gulfport to walk the bridge three times a week.  He sees the vision of a more walkable, connected community taking shape in the city.

"What is amazing to me is that it all fits together. It's like the overall picture has been completed," Rouse says.

But, the picture isn't fully developed.  A project is also underway to extend Porter Avenue from the bridge to downtown.

The plan, while still in progress, is inching closer to creating a city where using your legs can get you just as much mileage as driving your car.

The project was paid for with economic stimulus dollars.  MDOT will oversee the upkeep of the park.
