D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Sources have confirmed to WLOX News that D'Iberville has won the Ocean Expo Learning Center sweepstakes. Those sources tell us a site on the southwest corner of I-10 and I-110 beat out locations that were pitched by Biloxi and Gulfport.
The oceanarium will be built by Dr. Moby Solangi and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. It has a $10 million dollar federal grant to create a complex that features dolphin shows, aquarium exhibits and bird sanctuaries. Our sources say the grant requires that facility to be built by the end of 2011.
According to an IMMS news release, "This one-of-a-kind marine education center will provide both students and the general public an opportunity to learn about nature and marine mammals."
A news conference will be held Wednesday at noon to formally unveil which city will be home to the oceanarium. D'Iberville's mayor and its city council members have been invited to attend the announcement.
