Coast church celebrates 75 years

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Instead of suits and hats, members of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church sported denim overalls and old fashion bonnets. At their pastor's request, church members dressed in period clothing as a way to connect to their history and heritage.  In the church lobby stood a display of period items like old fashioned washing boards and butter churns.

"I want us to be thankful and aware of where we are, but also to remember and reflect from whence we've come. So we asked everybody to dress the part," Pastor Davis said.

The 75 year journey for Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church actually began in Biloxi.  It started under the leadership of the Rev. C.L. Lindsay, affectionately called the Rev. C.L. "sin-killing" Lindsay.

"When I look at the past of this church and the heritage and history thereof, I see a lot of greatness," Davis said.

Current Pastor Kenneth Davis said the church has worked to continue that legacy through a variety of ministries.  Davis said the church has strong children, prison and health awareness ministries.  Every first Sunday, the church holds evening sessions on health-related issues and has a resource center with information on healthy living.

"The health awareness team invites someone in from the medical community to come in and raise awareness on certain issues like cancer, hypertension and anything else we need to know," Davis said.

The program's guest speaker was the Rev. Eric Dickey, now pastor of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Biloxi.  Dickey grew up in Tabernacle, and his grandfather A.A. Dickey served as one of the church's former pastors.

"He [A.A. Dickey] passed many years prior to me coming into the ministry.  I would have loved to have had him with me to go into the ministry.  It's very exciting to have been invited to my home church, Tabernacle, to continue seeing the things that God has done here," Dickey said.

Though much has changed in the church's 75 year history, Pastor Davis said there's one thing that won't.

"Our purpose remains the same, and the purpose is to lift up Jesus Christ," Davis said.

Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church is located at 10587 Automall Parkway in D'Iberville, MS.
