Keep America Beautiful comes to Pass Christian

By Jessica Bowman – email

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Keep America Beautiful held a "Green Starts Here" rally Saturday in Pass Christian honoring the National 2010 Great American Cleanup. The "Green Starts Here" events took place at 11 different sites. Cleaning and improving was the group's main goal.

Hundreds of volunteers joined together hauling dirt and planting flowers.

Matthew Slavics said, "We're just laying down sod. This grass right here basically mulching and making sure it's staggered, so the grass will grow even and full."

Mulch is poured onto the ground and spread out, making a bed for new life to begin.

Keep America Beautiful Senior Vice President Gail Cunningham said, "Wait 'till you see these azaleas blooming; they're going to be beautiful."

Cunningham said this is the group's fifth year to return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for beautification restoration activities.

"We know that they need help that they've been doing a lot themselves but we want to keep coming back and refreshing their spirit and refreshing their public spaces and making areas for them to really feel like they have an improved quality of life for all of them to enjoy," said Gail Cunningham.

"They're doing a tremendous job here. There's a lot of volunteers, a lot of work and a lot of effort being put in by so many people," said Mayor Chipper McDermott.

11 sites throughout the city received a makeover. One of those sites included War Memorial Park, and that's where you could find Miss America, Caressa Cameron, putting her landscaping skills to the test.

"It's important to plant trees. It's important to recycle, and it's important to do stuff to conserve our earth. So I hope we've planted that seed," said Cameron.

National sponsors donated all the tools and items necessary to make this project happen.

Cunningham said there were nearly 1,000 volunteers helping out. Some of the sites getting a makeover included Friendship Park, Randolph Community Center and the Boys and Girls Club.
