By Jeff Shepard – bio | email

BILOXI, MS – The SPHL announced on Friday that Mississippi Surge defenseman Steve Weidlich and goaltender Bill Zaniboni were named to the All-SPHL First Team and that forwards Matt Zultek and Mike Richard were named to the All-SPHL Second Team.

Steve Weidlich leads all defensemen with 42 points, 36 assists and 26 power-play assists.  In seven seasons with the Laredo Bucks, Weidlich won two Central Hockey League championships (2004, 2006), five consecutive division titles (2004-08), made four appearances in the Ray Miron President's Cup finals (2005-08) and advanced to the second round of the playoffs seven times.

Bill Zaniboni leads SPHL goaltenders with 22 wins (tied-1st) and three shutouts, while his 2.55 goals-against average and .919 save percentage is second best in the league.  Since January 21, Zaniboni is 16-3-1 with a 2.22 goals-against average.

Matt Zultek leads the SPHL with 30 power-play goals and 290 shots on goal, while his 45 goals ranks second and his six game-winning goals are tied for third-best in the league. Zultek's 30 goals with the man-advantage are a new SPHL record, breaking the previous mark of 25 set by Columbus' Ryan Rutz in the 2006-07 season.

Michael Richard is tied for the league lead with a +19 rating.  Richard's 50 assists, 24 power-play assists and seven game-winning goals are all second-most in the SPHL.  The 2008-09 Rookie of the Year currently ranks fourth in scoring with 74 points.
