Beach boardwalk is a big hit in Biloxi

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - David Burkhamer loves to toss the Frisbee with his young son on the sugar white sands of Biloxi.  He also likes to pursue one of his favorite pastimes on the boardwalk.

"It's very convenient for people walking," Burkhamer said.  "I mean, it's a hobby of plenty of people in the neighborhood and the area and far away just like to come and enjoy a beautiful day like this. They've got room to walk, ride bikes. And for kids, skateboard if they want."

The boardwalk has become so popular, even the seagulls can't resist talking a stroll. That is when they're not picking up a free meal from their human friends.

Alise Brilinski and her friends just like to stick their toes in the sand and enjoy each other's company.  She said the  boardwalk adds to the beauty of the coast.

"It helps the coast drive be a lot more beautiful, it looks better, it looks a lot better, and we can walk our dogs."

Many of the folks we talked to miss the old wooden boardwalk, which was destroyed by Katrina. But they said this boardwalk is just as nice to play on, and it's going to be around a lot longer if another storm ever hits.

You can put Jason Clark in that camp.  While he was busy putting together a kite, his wife and daughter ran a race in the sand.  Jason said he knows the value of building strong.

"With the original boardwalk, you get that sense of a traditional boardwalk. But I think with the cement, the concrete block, it has a stronger foundation," Clark said.  "It's something that's going to be here for awhile."

And with the boardwalk in place and in use, visitors and locals alike will enjoy it for years to come.

The new boardwalk covers eight miles of the 26 mile long sand beach in Harrison County, and cost $11 million to build.  FEMA paid  the entire cost of the project.
