Stop Meth now - - The News for South Mississippi

WLOX Editorial:

Stop Meth now

At the same time last weekend that ABC News was reporting how successful the state of Oregon has been in combating and reducing its Meth problem, Jackson County has had a record number of Meth arrests, a total of 19. Add in the arrests for the rest of the state and no doubt we have a serious problem in Mississippi.

The state of Oregon back in 2001 had the same problem until law enforcement officials got their legislature to pass a bill that cold medicine with pseudoephedrine can only be purchased with a doctor's prescription.  Since then Oregon has seen a dramatic reduction, with only a few Meth arrests each year.

We editorialized on this recently and joined our law enforcers in encouraging Mississippi legislators to pass a similar law, which they did. We are hopeful our new law will have just as strong an impact on eliminating Meth as Oregon's did.

But we should not stop there, we need to alert our neighboring states that our new law will take affect July 1st and there's the possibility of some Mississippians crossing state lines to buy pseudoephedrine without a prescription. We urge our Governor and law enforcement officials to ask Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee officials to pass similar legislation.

Mississippi has taken the right step in attempting to curve this curse on our society, now we need the help of our neighbors to join us in this effort.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to, or post your comments below.
