GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Seabee Base Commander Capt. Ed Brown opened Thursday's salute to the military and first responders with words of praise.

"They run toward danger. They volunteer and they help people who don't know they need help," Brown said. "For our military members, they support and defend the constitution of the United States."

The Lyman Community Center was packed with Gulfport Chamber of Commerce members eager to show how much first responders and the military mean to the gulf coast. Breakfast was on the house and so was the camaraderie.

"This is the one day that the chamber gets together to formally recognize them for all that they do to make our quality of life and safety what it is, which makes this a wonderful place to live and work," Chamber President Ric Williams said.

One by one, the men and women were recognized and given plaques of appreciation.  They were from all branches of the service, and from the public safety sector as well.

One of those honored was Petty Officer 1st Class Terry Spain of the Seabee Base, who had his own message of thanks.

"I recognize that the gulf coast here is very proactive when it comes to the military. And it means a lot to me because it shows that the community cares, and that's the most important thing," Spain said.

And when the ceremony ended, these men and women went back to doing what they do best: protecting and serving.
