BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It's called the "power hour."  When Boys and Girls club members arrive in the afternoon, the "power hour" is spent working on homework.  Club members also do academic activities aimed at helping them excel on state tests.

For the past couple of months, a grant under the Department of Education has helped the East Biloxi club do more to make an impact during this time of study.

"With this 21st century grant, we've added staff; a total of five certified teachers out the school system come over and work with our kids," said Sadie Davis, unit manager for Boys and Girls Club of East Biloxi.

It's called the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program grant.  Besides more teachers, the grant money has become a big help to families.

"With this grant, members [kids] can come to the club free of charge for the school year, and their summer camp fee will be waived," Davis said.

While it's a place for learning, it's also the place for fun, especially during National Boys and Club week.  Throughout the week, The East Biloxi club will hold activities including a spelling bees and dress up days, like club pride day.

"A lot of people do have pride... I want to see who wins that," said Stephanie Scott, a Boys and Girls Club member.

Unit Manager Sadie Davis said the club will also host activities focusing on physical fitness and wellness.  The activities are always big hits with the kids.

"We have like tournaments. We have like dodge ball tournaments and free throw contests," said Jaydon Collins, another Boys and Girls Club member.

The highlights of the week is the annual talent show.  The club is inviting the community to come out to hear the drumline, see the dance team as well as other great acts this Friday at 5 p.m.

Other coast clubs will hold events throughout the week. The Qatar Center in Pass Christian is holding an open house on Thursday.  The Boys and Girls Club in D'Iberville will host a family carnival on Friday.  Saturday, the Forest Heights club in Gulfport will hold a neighborhood clean-up.  For more info.
