George County volunteer firefighter charged with arson

LUCEDALE, MS (AP) - A George County volunteer firefighter has been charged with starting the fires he was supposed to be fighting.

Sheriff's department spokesman Tony Keel says 29-year-old Michael Cooley of Lucedale was charged this past week with four felony counts of arson and starting woods fires. Cooley was released on $25,000 bond after a justice court appearance.

Keel says Cooley's arrest came after an investigation by the Mississippi State Forestry Commission, Mississippi State Fire Marshal's Office and sheriff's deputies.

Keel says the fires occurred between March 1 and March 8. He says most of the fires were set in the Agricola/Barton area.

No court date has been set.
