Coast cupcake business heating up

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) - The process begins in the pre-dawn hours at F & B Catering in St. Martin.  Cupcakes are meticulously decorated and packaged.  And we're talking a lot of cupcakes, according to Chef John LaCroix.

"Just for the stores, we run about 22 to 25,000," LaCroix said.

The cakes are boxed up and delivered to the stores.  The original store in Ocean Springs, a new location in Gulfport, and now a store in D'Iberville.  Customers come in from all areas, and they like what they see.  Orders also come in by phone every day.

For the folks who own and operate Frosting, it's just not a matter of dollars and cents when it comes to being successful in business. It's also being involved in the community.  Marketing Director Travis Gay said that's another reason for the business's success.

"We've tried to be extremely active in the communities where we have a store located, Boys and Girls Club, the United Way," Gay said.  "We actually do a sponsorship with St. Martin High School, a spot positive program where a student is spotted in the appropriate dress or uniform receives a free cupcake."

It's also a fun place for the newer employees, and those who have been there since the beginning.  But what's so special about selling cupcakes?

"Meeting new people and putting a smile on their faces when they come into the store and see all the wonderful cupcakes that we do," Sarah Shell said.

And judging by the smiles, Frosting has apparently found the recipe for business success in South Mississippi.

Frosting operators are also trying to come up with a plan to deliver cupcakes to other coast businesses, such as coffee houses.  The company currently has 25 employees on the payroll.
