Hurricane Science conference underway at LSU

BATON ROUGE, LA (WLOX) - Weather and coastal experts from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are co-sponsoring a conference with Louisiana State University this week. They'll discuss the state of affairs of hurricane science and storm surge along the central Gulf Coast.

Hurricane season is still more than two months away, but emergency management, weather experts and LSU scientists are meeting this week to discuss improvements in the monitoring, warning and preparations for future storms.

Mother Nature has raised the stakes in terms of landfall threats in recent years. At the same time, coastal wetland loss is leaving communities more susceptible to the impacts of these storms.

The two-day workshop will cover a broad range of hurricane-related topics, focusing on current hurricane-monitoring tools and goals for developing new forecasting and preparedness products.

The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1.
