Gautier thoroughfares up for repaving

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX) - Orange seems to be the unofficial city color of Gautier these days.  Barrels, blockades and road cones lie along several major roads as workers repave them.

"It comes from some of the money that was handed down from the federal government, and state leaders," explained City Manager Sidney Runnels. "These are all state-aid roads, and these roads all need to be repaired, and they are."

Runnels said the federal and state money is paying for paving of Ladnier Road, Old Spanish Trail, Graveline Road, and soon, Gautier-Vancleave Road.  Hwy 90 is also being resurfaced and expanded.

"We've got a lot of great things going in Gautier," said Mayor Tommy Fortenberry.  "And it's a beautiful day out here too. And to see all this going on, it just shows signs of progress in Gautier."

Mayor Fortenberry is grateful the state and federal governments are investing in his city.

"As far as the citizens of Gautier, to have their roads smoothed out, it means a lot and we'd like to do a lot more," said Fortenberry.

So even though the construction may get frustrating, Fortenberry and Runnels ask the public for patience.

"If people would just hold their breath for a while, and once they're done, I think we'll all be proud of it," said Runnels.

"Whenever you get money and can resurface our roads, it just makes Gautier a better place to live," said Fortenberry. "And its just about improving the quality of life for the citizens of Gautier."

Fortenberry said one piece of Graveline Road has been blocked off for several weeks now, although progress has been held up by delivery of faulty materials.  Fortenberry said that portion of road will reopen this week, and will not close again until new materials arrive and work can continue.
