Church members sleep in boxes, just like the homeless

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The parking lot of Mosaic Church was filled with boxes early this morning, but they weren't empty boxes.  The boxes were makeshift homes for church members who slept in them overnight.  It was not very comfortable.

Members of Mozaic Church in Ocean Springs wanted to make a statement, wanted to bring awareness to the plight of the homeless and what better way to do that than to live the life of the homeless themselves.  And so they did, from the young, to the older members, even people suffering from medical problems.

Pastor Dustin Boles explained the bold experiment.  "We have two goals, one is to raise awareness so people can get a little bit of an experience as to what it might be like to be homeless, not a complete experience but enough to breed some compassion, secondly is just to raise a ton of money."

So, just how was that money raised. Outreach Pastor Jeremy Allen came up with a unique way to do that.  "Everybody that has spent the night in a box has sponsored their box financially and all the money, 100 percent of the money will go to the Back Bay Mission."

Church members were a little reluctant at first, but with guidance from above, the choice was an easy one. Jonathan Latch was one of those members.  He tells WLOX News. "Honestly at first I was like not wanting to sleep outside, but at the last minute I prayed about it and decided this was the best thing to do so, it was a good idea.

Pastor Boles agrees.  "There was a bit of, are you kidding me kind of thing going on but once everyone realized I wasn't kidding, everybody jumped on." Boles said. And they jumped into their boxes for a not so pleasant night's sleep.

Mosaic Church had a goal of raising two thousand dollars, but by the time daylight broke, more than 4000 dollars had been donated.
