Vendors hoping for a prosperous boat and RV show

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - More than 100 boats and RVs are on display through the weekend at the convention center.  Vendors working the show are hoping the number of boats and campers will be reduced significantly by Sunday evening.

Potential boat and RV buyers seem to be cooperating, according to Jerry Adkerson of Ocean Marine.

"We're very encouraged by what we've seen since the first of the year." Adkerson said.  "We see a difference in people's attitudes and their buying habits and we're seeing some pretty decent boat sales."

On the RV side of the show, vendors credit the lifestyle of those who love to RV with keeping the industry up and running. Some vendors even come from different states to sell that lifestyle. David Randall manages Camping World in Robertsdale, Alabama.

"So far this year it's been great," Randall said. "We actually had our best month last month that we've had in over a year and a half."

It's been a rough couple of years for the folks who sell boats and RVs. The economy has played a major role in their sales, but they're looking forward to 2010 and remain optimistic this is going to be a much better year.

Another trend that's growing in industry, bigger is not necessarily better.  Winston Harbin is with Roughwater Marine.

"More people are looking for something a little bit smaller to purchase these days," Harbin said. "The majority of the boats we sell are between 15 and 21 feet and we've seen more traffic in that size."

And after churning through rough waters the past two years, any traffic coming through the doors is a good sign.

For the first time, the entire Boat and RV Show is being held in the new convention center, and not the actual coliseum. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages six through 12.
