WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) - Workers at Flint Creek are busy this week putting in new amenities and doing some spring clean up. The cabins are ready to welcome visitors as the weather gets warmer.

As boaters are busy reeling in fish, park officials want to reel in more visitors this summer. Stewart Smith is the marketing director for the park.

"Since Hurricane Katrina, we've had many new residents move into the Mississippi Gulf Coast, even into Stone County, the New Orleans area, so we have been on a marketing blitz to let people know what we have to offer here," Smith said.

What the park offers is plentiful.  The water park opens in May. There is boating, swimming in the crystal clear lake, and miles of wooded trails to walk through.

But Smith said one of the biggest attractions may be the value the park offers. In these tough economic times, vacationers are doing whatever it takes to make their budgets go even further. And many of the folks staying at Flint Creek Water Park believe they're getting a good deal.

Jolet Dusenbery is one of those people. She loves the view from her camper, but loves something else even more.

"We're down from the north, and it's much cheaper to actually camp down here than it is to stay home and pay the heating costs. So for a lot of people traveling and wanting the warm weather, this is really a nice place."

The park is trying something new to help visitors save even more, according to Executive Director Hiram Boone.

"We have established a camper storage area that people can leave their camper and not have to pull it back and forth, saving gasoline and reducing their costs of camping," Boone said.  "This ensures that they'll be coming back to Flint Creek."

And coming back to the beauty of Flint Creek could be the highlight of any vacation.

Cabin rates at Flint Creek can be as low as $60 a night for one bedroom units, and package deals are available for those who plan to stay several days. Camp sites, of course, are much less. Click here to learn more about what the park has to offer.
