GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) – Gulfport Police believe they know who has been posing as a city water employee in order to steal from homes.

A warrant was issued Tuesday for Michael Mitchell, 32, of Crestview, Florida. Investigators believe he may be the man targeting older residents of the city's Bayou View neighborhood.

Police told WLOX News last week that a dark skinned man walked up to three different homes and said he had to test the water inside for safety reasons. Investigators said moments later, the man would take off in a newer model pickup truck with items he stole from the residence.

The officer said the thief didn't wear a uniform. He just pretended to be associated with a company doing water work. All three burglaries were near Bayou View, in an area where water line work was taking place.
