Legislature to honor Bay High players Thursday

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - The state 4A championship winning Bay High basketball team will be honored by the Mississippi Legislature Thursday.

Bay-Waveland School Superintendent Dr. Rebecca Ladner and Coach Kelton Thompson will join the players for the big event. This is the first time since the inception of the boy's basketball program at Bay High School that the boy's basketball team has won first place in the state championship game.

"This in and of itself is quite an accomplishment; but when one considers this event in the context of what the citizens of Bay St. Louis and Waveland endured during and after Hurricane Katrina, this is nothing short of a miracle. I believe this sends a message to everyone in the state that not only is the Bay St. Louis-Waveland School District back, but we are even better then ever," said Dr. Rebecca Ladner.

The championship play-off game was between St. Stanislaus College and Bay High School.

"For one of these schools to have made it to the state championship is impressive given what the players, parents and coaches have undergone," said State Senator David Baria. "For them both to make it to the championship game is a testament to fortitude and determination."

"While it is a shame that somebody had to lose the game, Bay High won with a big fourth quarter comeback. However, both of these teams are winners in every sense of the word."
