Task Force offers free HIV/AIDS testing

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States. So to help raise awareness for HIV and AIDS, the South Mississippi AIDS Task Force (SMATF) visited Gulfport High School Wednesday.

Because Harrison County is second in this state for new HIV cases, task force members feel it is important to get the word out about protecting yourself from the virus.

While Wednesday's efforts were directed at young women, the young men on campus were also given information. But task force members said it's especially important to target teenage age girls.

"We want the young high school girls to know that HIV is preventable, to get tested. We want to promote abstinence and the girls taking care of themselves," said Trinette Crump with the SMATF.

Free testing for HIV is available for anyone through the South Mississippi AIDS Task Force. Just call (228) 385-1214 or 1-877-385-1214 for more information.
