Attorney General warns of email tax scam

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - Attorney General Jim Hood Monday re-issued a Consumer Alert warning Mississippi taxpayers of an email scam.  The people behind the email use Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) name as means to obtain personal and/or financial information.

The emails claim to be from the IRS and may come in several versions. The Attorney General and the IRS remind taxpayers that the IRS does not send emails to taxpayers to advise them of refunds or to request financial information.

"We typically see this type of scam as tax season approaches," said Attorney General Hood. "To best protect yourself; do not share any personal information in this way, do not reply to the email, do not open the attachments or click on any links."

If you receive such an email, you can report it by forwarding it to phishing@irs.gov , or if you are unsure of an email you have received from the IRS, you can call 1-800-366-4484 to verify if it is legitimate.

Anyone who suspects they have been a victim of this fraud or any other, should contact the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office at 1-800-281-4418.

This alert and others like it can be found on the Consumer section of the Attorney General's website.
