WIGGINS, MS (WLOX) - A newly formed organization says it is ready to house stray, abandoned and neglected dogs and cats. The Stone County Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been overseeing the fostering of animals in private homes since it formed back in December.

Members say they've secured as property on Highway 49 in Wiggins to start an animal shelter. SPCA plans to go before the Wiggins Board of Aldermen on March 16th. Members say they'll ask the city to transfer a contract it now has with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Since the Humane Society is in Gulfport, SPCA members say they feel a shelter in Wiggins would better serve the animals and residents of Stone County.

"If we bring it here, we're not going to be spending money on transporting it," said Katie Stonnington. "The money will all stay here in the county. The citizens here will have a place to get dogs and a place drop dogs off . Cats too."

Carol Smith said, "It will help the citizens of the county and the city and be more convenient for them. It will help promote adoptions and the spay and neuter program. We're hoping we'll be able to do just a lot of things for everybody here."

Stone County SPCA officials say if they are awarded the contract to run the shelter they'll start off with outdoor kennels but hope to later erect a building.
