Phase one construction at Jones Park will resume Monday

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport city officials say they are excited about what is ahead for Jones Park. The first phase of a major construction project started months ago, but has been on hold. However, that may not be the case for long.

Ship Island Excursions can expect to be joined by other attractions at the park sooner rather than later.

"That includes the splash pad in the eastern corner of the park and that work is being done along with construction of the new CTA station," City Spokesman Ryan LaFontaine said.

LaFontaine said current construction has come to a halt for phase one.

"Roy Anderson is doing both the splash pad and the CTA station, so we stopped the work on the splash pad to allow the CTA station to catch up."

LaFontaine said construction is set to resume on the splash pad as early as Monday. Once cranes are moved and concrete is poured, the construction site will start to look more like the city's master plan.

"We think it's going to be finished as early as June."

So what is in store for the other two phases?

"The project is big and includes things like possibly a new pavilion and some other entertainment features. We're really excited about it."

As to what those entertainment features are, that part of the project is not being released right now.

LaFontaine said they hope to begin on phase two sometime next month. He said phase two includes the construction of Jones Park Drive, which will run along the harbor in front of the boat launches.
