LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Researchers, teachers, students and people interested in history are participating in a conference at the USM Gulf Coast Campus. The program is titled "Charting New Courses in the History of Slavery and Emancipation."

"We go all the way from the Atlantic slave trade to slavery in the Colonial north," said USM Professor Max Grivano.

Walt Perkins, a school teacher from Chicago, came all the way to South Mississippi to broaden his understanding of the slavery issue.

"You hear a lot about slavery in America, but the trade of slaves across the Atlantic is a gap in the history books that needs to be filled," Perkins said.

Scholars and experts came from across America and from around the world. The conference is open to the public. It resumes at 8:45 Friday morning in the Advanced Education Center on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
