Gautier out of the fight against Ocean Springs annexation plans

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) – The City of Gautier is out of the fight against Ocean Springs' annexation plans. The Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen authorized an agreement Tuesday saying the city will not annex a piece of land east of Highway 57, adjacent to Gautier.

Gautier Mayor Tommy Fortenberry told WLOX News he signed the agreement several weeks ago, and his city no longer opposes Ocean Springs' proposed annexation of some other land in Jackson County.

Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran said the new agreement is a step forward in the annexation process.

"It was the board's intent that I negotiate with other cities and agencies, the Board of Supervisors, those people who are most impacted by annexation, to see if we could come to some agreement ahead of time," said Moran. "Certainly, that's less time in court, less taxpayer expense for the annexation. We'd rather take that money and put it back to work here in Ocean Springs."

Moran said the City of Ocean Springs plans to file for annexation in Chancery Court within the next month.
