2 separate accidents claim 2 lives

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - On Monday at 3:39pm, Gulfport Police responded to a crash in the 1100 block of Cowan Road. Once on the scene, police said they found out a 2001 Ford Windstar was traveling northbound on Cowan when a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier pulled out across traffic from a private drive in front of the Windstar.

The driver of the Cavalier was 86-year-old Leon Anderson. Police say Anderson's car was struck on the driver's side door. He was unresponsive when officers arrived.

Anderson died of blunt trauma to the chest at Garden Park, hours after the accident. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said he suffered cardiac arrest after being hit.

Another tragedy in Gulfport took the life of 44-year-old James Pelfrey. Gulfport Police responded to a call involving a cyclist shortly before 11:00 Monday night.

Police said a 2010 Ford Eagle driven by 23-year-old Anthony Green was heading east on Seaway Road when his vehicle struck a cyclist, also headed east on Seaway Road.

According to Hargrove, Green called the police. When they arrived on the scene, Pelfrey was unresponsive and was transported to Memorial Hospital. Pelfrey died at 5:30 Tuesday morning from blunt trauma to the head.

Green was cited for driving on a suspended license and no proof of liability insurance.
