Coast students reach out to help earthquake victims

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Some coast high school students are pitching in to help Haiti's earthquake victims.

On Saturday, Harrison County High School hosted the Hope For Haiti Project. Students organized a festival and a rummage sale.  They also sold t-shirts and bracelets they designed themselves.

It was all as part of a fundraiser to help Haitian relief efforts. School officials say it's important the young people understand their responsibility in making the world a better place.

Amy Nguyen is a teacher and the event coordinator. "We just think it's important to teach them about compassion and community service so that they know that it's vital to be involved in their community and involved in other people's lives, not just their own."

Nguyen says the students received a lot of support from local businesses and civic groups.
