Sea World trainer began career in South Mississippi

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The SeaWorld trainer who was killed by a whale Wednesday began her career in Gulfport.

Moby Solangi with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies confirmed that Dawn Brancheau worked with the dolphins at the old Marine Life Oceanarium, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Solangi told WLOX News Brancheau was a "wonderful girl" and did dolphin shows at Marine Life in the 1990s. Solangi said many of the IMMS staff worked with Brancheau then and everyone there is in shock over the tragedy.

Brancheau was killed Wednesday when a killer whale named Tilikum dragged the 40-year-old trainer Brancheau into the pool at SeaWorld Orlando. The tragic accident happened right in front of park visitors.
