BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Matt Zultek has been a spark plug for the Surge. In 40 games, the 6 foot 4, 210 pound 9th year veteran of pro hockey has netted a team leading 40 goals and 18 assists for 58 points. Last week Zultek set the S-P-H-L single season power play record. He now has 27 power play goals.

Matt Zultek said, "I've got a great unit of five guys out there that try to get me the puck as much as I can and you know it's going real well."

Zultek was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, 15th overall, of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. That pick was acquired from St. Louis along with another draft pick and three players in exchange for Wayne Gretzky. In 1999, Zultek was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

He's been around and Zultek says Surge head coach Steffon Walby has done wonders with the team since the beginning of the SPHL season.

Zultek said, "It's a tough beginning you know getting a new group of guys together that have never played together and it takes some time to adjust. I think we've done that and we've come together as a group. Everyone is playing with a lot of confidence right now."

The Surge battle the Fireantz Friday night looking to remain atop the SPHL standings.

Zulteck said, "That's one thing coach Walby is always telling us, you know, it's one thing to get to the top and it's another thing to stay on top so it's a tough task. Everyone is going to be coming in and play us every night trying to knock us off the top but we're going to keep playing like we have been and hopefully carry it through the playoffs here."

Matt Zultek is a key cog in the success of the Mississippi Surge and he's ready to turn up the heat beginning Friday night against Fayetteville.
