Surge players supporting cancer survivors, early detection

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Members of the Mississippi Surge hockey team spent part of their day at Gulfport's Memorial Hospital Tuesday. They were there to meet with several breast cancer survivors and take a tour of the women's diagnostic center that specializes in detecting and treating breast cancer.

This Sunday, the Surge will have its annual "Pink in the Rink" game. The players will wear pink jerseys that will be auctioned off. All the proceeds will go towards helping cover the cost of mammograms at Memorial for women who otherwise could not afford it.

"Hockey here in Mississippi and on the Gulf Coast for the last two years has adopted the program of raising funds for early breast cancer awareness," Stefon Walby with the Mississippi Surge said. "And we are picking up the torch and the Surge is taking it to the new level."

The "Pink in the Rink" game is this Sunday at 3pm. The jersey auction will take place at Hard Rock Casino immediately after the game.
