Wearing your seatbelt can save your life

A trend is becoming apparent to us. Recently it seems more and more often we hear from officers after a fatal traffic accident that the victim wasn't wearing a seatbelt. While we cannot say for certain, it does appear many of those deaths could have been prevented if they would have buckled up.

Statistics show that 63 percent of people killed in accidents are not wearing seatbelts. And, the leading cause of death for individuals under age 35 is a car accident. Mississippi Highway Patrol Corporal Johnny Poulos says a person not wearing a seatbelt during an accident can become a missile inside of a vehicle, causing deadly injuries to other passengers as they are tossed around.

There are many safety features on today's cars like air bags to help you survive a crash. But, one of those safety features depends on you using it. If you buckle up you have a greater chance of not being thrown through a windshield, ejected or becoming a human missile.

Wear your seatbelt, it just might save your life and others.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
