BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – The Mississippi NAACP and the Gulf Coast Fair Housing Center have filed an appeal of a ruling that allows for the diversion of $570 million in Housing and Urban Development money for expansion at the port of Gulfport. Last month, the U.S. District Court in Washington granted a motion to HUD to dismiss the case.
Housing advocates on the coast have long contended the money should be used to provide low income housing for people who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. State officials say the expansion will be good for the coast's economy and provide hundreds of high paying jobs.
