D'Ibervillle church goes "red" for heart disease awareness

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - Members of a D'Iberville church sang their hearts out Sunday morning.  Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church dressed in red to raise awareness about heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in our country and a major health problem among African Americans.

For three years as part of American Heart Month the church has put on a heart walk and invited a guest speaker to talk about the risks for heart disease and how it can be prevented. This year's speaker was Veronica Holloway, a nurse practitioner.

"The most important thing is we have to educate people," said Holloway. "I think the lack of knowledge is one of the reasons why heart disease is the number one killer in America. A lot of people don't know and don't have the information they need to prevent it."

Rev. Kenneth Maurice Davis says the church recognizes the connection between spiritual and physical well-being.

"The Bible teaches us that we should take great care and diligence to strengthen our heart because from the heart goes the issues of life. Emotional issues as well as physical issues," Rev. Davis said. "So the heart is just so important."

Rev. Davis says over the past few years he has noticed the awareness campaign making a positive difference in the overall health of the congregation.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
