How to get over a hangover

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A lot of Saints fans gathered at bars and parties to watch the big game Sunday, and the alcohol was definitely flowing. And the celebration will continue with a Saints parade Tuesday and Mardi Gras festivities all the way through Fat Tuesday next week.

So how do people make it through the next day after all the celebrations that often include heavy drinking?  A number of fans we talked with said they "have another drink in the morning" to cure their hangovers.  But medical experts have a more scientific theory.

Dr. Daniel Overbeck is an emergency room doctor at Garden Park Medical Center. He said there are four things that can help you get back on your feet after a drinking binge.

"You want to replace the salt and water lost the night before from dehydration," Dr. Overbeck said, "and have the dog take you for a walk. Get some fresh air, some oxygen flowing through your brain."

"Bouillon helps because it's high in salt, potassium. So all those electrolytes get washed out by the alcohol and if you replace them, you'll feel a little bit better. You also don't want to do anything dangerous, because that alcohol stays with you the next day for a while."

Of course the best advice is to not drink too much to begin with, and you won't have a hangover.

Dr. Overbeck also wants to remind people to not drink and drive, and to have a designated driver when you are out drinking.  Plus, he said, if someone appears to be in trouble or passes out from drinking, don't hesitate to call 911. You could save someone's life.
