PORT ALLEN, LA (WAFB) - Serial killer Derrick Todd Lee appeared in a West Baton Parish courtroom Tuesday morning seeking relief on his second-degree murder conviction there, but the judge presiding over the case issued a six-month continuance.
Judge Robin Free set a post-conviction hearing for Aug. 3. Lee wants to appeal his 2004 conviction in the death of Geralyn DeSoto, a 21-year-old LSU graduate student. She was brutally beaten to death in her Addis home on Jan. 14, 2002.
The case was Lee's first murder conviction. He was sentenced to life in prison. Lee later received the death penalty when an East Baton Rouge Parish jury convicted him of first-degree murder.
Earlier this month, he appeared at the 19th Judicial District Court for a hearing where his lawyers asked for more time to prepare his post-conviction appeal there. The judge granted the defense team six months to answer a motion filed by prosecutors. Judge Richardson Anderson ruled that hearing will take place on July 12.
