Saints golf carts are big sellers

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - About midway through this historic season for the Saints, South Mississippi  businessman David Dreher had an idea.

Dreher owns Gulf Coast Golf Carts, just outside of Diamondhead. With the Saints playing so well earlier in the season, he decided to customize a golf cart for New Orleans Saints fans, and see if anybody wanted to buy it.

"So, we kind of built one as a prototype, and put it out there. And the next day, we knew we were on to something," Dreher said.

That first customized Saints cart, sold in less than one day. That was a few months ago, and since that time, Dreher has been customizing a lot of carts for Saints fans.

While we were at the business, recently, we happened to meet Louis Wattigney and his 13 year old son Austin.

Louis said he has been a Saints fan for as long as he can remember. When he heard that Gulf Coast Golf Carts was customizing Saints carts, he came over here from his St. Bernard parish home and became one of the first to buy one here.

"This is my pride and joy," a beaming Wattigney said.

As you might imagine the reaction of Saints fans when they see Louis driving down the road in that cart, is interesting.

"Oh, they love it! They start yelling and screaming Who Dat, Who Dat," Louis said.

The other day, Louis drove his golf cart to the local school to pick up his son.

"I was surprised, really surprised, at first I did not think he would do that," Austin told us while barely able to hold back a chuckle.

Ironically, the Favre compound, where Brett grew up and his mom still lives, is only a few hundred yards from David Deher's business.

When asked if he might drive down there in his Saints cart, Louis told us he doubts it.

"They probably would not let me in the gate," he said. "I have heard Bonita is a real nice lady, but she might try to sack me like the Saints sacked Brett last week," Louis added with a big smile on his face.

The customized carts retail for about $4,000 and up.
