ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA (WLOX) - Human remains found on one of the Chandeleur Islands in Louisiana have been identified as those of Ocean Springs Police Officer Stephen Bond. The St. Bernard Parish coroner's office contacted the family and confirmed the identity on Wednesday morning.
A fisherman discovered the remains on the north sided of the island Saturday and contacted the coast Guard.
Bond, an Ocean Springs Police Officer, went missing back in May after their boat capsized near Horn Island.
The other four were rescued, but after an exhaustive search by the Coast Guard, fellow Ocean Springs Police Officers, and family members, Bond was never found.
His memorial service was held in June.
According to Ocean Springs Police, they were asked by St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Department to contribute personal data to assist in identifying the body.
The remains were sent to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office to be identified.
Officials say the cause of death is not yet known.
