Ocean Springs man challenges city to drop the fat

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - An Ocean Springs man is on a mission to help his community lose 1,699 pounds in only 12 weeks.  Vincent Jackson picked 1699 because the city was founded that year.  The goal is to get more people exercising and eating right.

Jackson owns Nutrition by Design Gym, and he always had a passion for helping people get physically fit.  He said a lot of people in Mississippi are not in shape. With the label of the fattest state in the nation, Jackson knew he had to get his community healthy.

"It is a lifestyle to lose weight," Jackson said. "You have to literary change your way of life and your eating habits."

Jackson felt the best way for people to gain a healthier lifestyle was to challenge them to get up and get moving.  His 12 week 1,699 weight loss program aims to do just that.

"We offer nutrition; we teach folks how to eat five times a day for 12 weeks," Jackson said about the program. "We give them classes, and at the same time we also promote the exercise part."

Motivating a city to drop all the weight in less than three months is a challenge in itself.  Marcheta Hightower and Jill Deberry say they're ready and willing to lose weight.

"It is very hard to workout every day and tell yourself you can do it, but you have a lot of great people to help," Hightower said while exercising.

"It will make you an overall healthier and better person," Deberry said.

For more information on the weight loss program, call (228) 875-0335.  There is a $39 fee for the 12 week session.
