BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Based on sales tax figures, the business climate in Biloxi wasn't very good last year. According to a city spokesman, retail sales were down more than a million dollars. And tax collections fell to their lowest level in 10 years.
The mayor believes Biloxi should bring in the Buxton consulting firm to flip those numbers.
Tuesday, Biloxi councilmen heard a presentation from the Buxton group. They learned that Buxton researchers analyze data, and determine which retailers belong in a city. Then they help to recruit those businesses to an area.
"In order to stimulate the economy, in order to stimulate the opportunities in Biloxi," Buxton Sr. Vice President Amy Buxton said, "you have to have a reason to shop, dine, and continue to bring the tourist. And so in order to have a strategy, have a plan, understand what retail restaurant opportunities are appropriate for Biloxi. Which ones to chase?"
The Biloxi City Council has not decided if it should hire Buxton to help recruit new businesses to the city.
