BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Excel by 5 is an initiative underway in our state right now to make our communities more child-friendly. The main goal is to ensure our children have everything they need by age five to grow up happy, healthy, and ready to learn.
One way of doing that, is providing child care centers and parents with the tools necessary to prepare children for kindergarten. Here's a look at some of the skills teachers surveyed in the Pascagoula school district say are essential for successful entry into kindergarten:
- Well-developed motor skills. A child should be able to use pencils, crayons, and scissors.
- A child should be familiar with books, and words. They should be able to recognize the alphabet and their first name in print, as well as basic shapes and colors.
- They should also know how to follow directions from their teachers, be able to take turns, and know how to share with their peers.
- When a child enters Kindergarten, they should be prepared for shorter nap times, and be able to complete a task in a given time.
If you work with your children on these things, it may help the transition from home or day care into a more structured classroom setting go a bit more smoothly.
