Cigarette the likely cause of fatal fire in Starkville

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - Fire investigators believe a smoldering cigarette left on a chair caused a fire that killed nine people in Starkville last week. The fire killed three woman and six children, ranging in age from six months to six years.

State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney said electrical engineers at State Farm examined what remained the of the apartment and ruled out an electrical fire. The blaze was the worst fatal fire to strike Mississippi in modern history.

Starkville Fire Chief Rodger Mann told a Jackson newspaper that fire officials are hoping to meet Wednesday to come to a unanimous agreement on what caused the fire.
