PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Even more extreme cold temperatures are moving into south Mississippi and everyone is bracing for the worst. The state remains under a state of emergency, declared by the governor.
The cold is also forcing some production shutdowns at Northrop Grumman's Pascagoula shipyard.
The shutdowns only affect the second and third shifts. Work on the second and third shifts will be suspended beginning Thursday through Sunday.
Northrop Grumman employees should call the employee hotline at 1-800-995-4318 to check for updates.
According to shipyard officials they have to turn off some waterlines in the extreme cold, so for safety reasons, production cannot continue.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is activated and the Highway Patrol is on 24-hour shifts. In South Mississippi, shelters remain open.
