Change has arrived

Most local residents who have gotten their drivers license renewed at one of the local drivers license locations have had to stand in long lines. We have editorialize about the long waits and the need for change. And we told you many months ago a change was coming. Well, now that change is here.

Kiosks have been set up at drivers license bureaus in D'iberville, Gulfport and Hattiesburg that promise an easy and timely way to renew your license. The kiosks work similar to an ATM or the machines you use for checking in at the airport.

In this case, you insert your old drivers license and follow the instructions. The machine takes your picture, updates your information and produces your new license in just a few minutes.

Also the machine has built in security features that will not allow someone to take another person's old license and get a new license in their name. And, you will not be able to use the machines if your address has changed.

Eventually Public Safety Commissioner Steve Simpson says he hopes to have 100 of these machines located throughout the state. This is a great Christmas present for the residents of our state who no longer will have to dread going to the license bureau and standing in a long line.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com, or post your comments below.
