Southern Miss Advances To The Quarterfinals Of The C-USA Women's Tournament

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) _ Allison Story converted a three-point play with 9 seconds remaining to help Southern Mississippi defeat Houston 71-69 in the first round of Conference USA tournament on Thursday.

Southern Miss (14-14) advances to the quarterfinals to play No. 2 seed Cincinnati on Friday.

Dana Jones scored a career-high 28 points for the Lady Eagles.

La'Tasha Sumerall had 11 points and Story chipped in 10.

Chandi Jones, the nation's leading scorer, led the Cougars with 27 points. She hit a free throw with 3 seconds left to make the score 71-69 and intentionally missed the second.

Jones grabbed her own rebound and put up an attempt that rattled out. She got to that rebound, too, but did no have time to get off another shot.
