New music school engages students early

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - There's a new school of rock in Biloxi.

The first of its kind on the coast, "Myhres School of Music" isn't a music store where lessons are sometimes offered. It's a school completely dedicated to teaching guitar, bass and keyboards. There's even something for newborns.

Its founders Mike and Cecilia Myhres are out to prove the power of music in education is immeasurable.

"He's a Star Wars fanatic," Michelle Nelson said of her son, 10-year-old Craig. "He was so excited when he learned the whole song, he had to tell everybody."

Nelson home schools her four children, and believes music is an important part of their education. She's seen Craig blossom since starting Myhres School of Music in Biloxi.

"He's more confident. He practices every day, and his teacher is so good that he has more of a passion for it now."

His passion comes from the feeling he gets when he learns a new song or chord.

"It feels good," Craig said.

School founder Mike Myhres also had that feeling as a child and has made a life long career out of music. He's taught guitar and bass for 20 years, and also teaches guitar at Ocean Springs High School. Now at his own school, he can focus on his 55 students individually.

"Well, when you're trying to describe something to somebody like a chord or a certain progression and the little kids goes, "Oh I get it," [it's] better than the money," Mike Myhres said.

Music actually brought Mike and his wife Cecilia together seven years ago. To include small children and their parents as well, Cecilia Myhres brought "Music Together" to South Mississippi.

"Music Together is an international curriculum," Cecilia Myhres explained. "It's a music and movement approach to early childhood music development."

"Music Together" is for children from birth to five years. To find out more about the curriculum or Myhres School of Music you can call (228) 669-8264 or visit www.MyhresSchoolofMusic.com.
